FIREFIGHTER
Interior Firefighter
A Firefighter Member is a fully trained and active responder who works both inside and outside of burning structures. These individuals commit to completing all departmental training and participation requirements. Members must successfully complete New York State’s Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (B.E.F.O.) and Interior Firefighting Operations (I.F.O./Firefighter 1) courses. Firefighters serve at the core of our mission—protecting lives and property—by performing the most demanding fireground operations while upholding the highest standards of training and safety.
SCENE SUPPORT MEMBER
A Scene Support Member is trained to assist at emergency scenes without entering burning structures. These individuals complete New York State’s Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations (B.E.F.O.) course and are eligible to respond to calls, assist on fire scenes, and support critical operations.
Scene Support Members play a vital role by:
- Operating outside of hazardous areas during emergencies
- Assisting with equipment and water supply
- Supporting fireground safety and rehabilitation efforts
- Driving and operating fire apparatus (with appropriate training and certification)
These members are essential to ensuring smooth and safe fireground operations while supporting Interior Firefighters.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER
An Associate Member plays a vital support role within the fire department. While they do not respond to emergency calls or train as firefighters, they contribute in many other essential ways. Associates assist with fundraising, administrative duties, community events, and rehabilitation support on the fireground. They help keep the department strong behind the scenes.
Associate Members are not considered firefighters and are not eligible for the Length of Service Awards Program (LOSAP), but their service provides invaluable support to the department and community.
Restricted active member
R.A.M
The Restricted Active Member (R.A.M.) Program provides young adults, ages 16–17, with the opportunity to begin their fire service journey in a safe, structured environment. R.A.M.s gain experience, participate in approved training, and prepare to become full, unrestricted members at age 18.
To qualify as a R.A.M., applicants must:
- Reside within the Brewerton Fire District or Brewerton Fire Protection District (out-of-district membership is not permitted).
- Have a parent or guardian present during the interview process and provide written consent.
All R.A.M.s operate under the Brewerton Fire District Restricted Active Member Policy, which ensures their safety and compliance with state and district regulations. This program is an excellent way for motivated teens to give back to their community, develop leadership skills, and prepare for a future in the fire service.
